    Interactive cardboard prototype

    Role

    Interaction Design, Physical Prototyping

    Details

    Personal Project (2 weeks)

    Tools used

Pen & Paper, Illustrator, Solidworks, Laser Cutter

    Users

Cassette owners who wish to convert their audio cassettes into digital format

    The task

To convert a song on the audio cassette into mp3 and send it via bluetooth to your phone using the cassette player.

    Storyboard & Initial Sketch

I started by creating a storyboard of the task that was supposed to be carried out using my product and created an initial sketch of the product along with some digital screen details.

    3D Modeling

After that I started 3D modeling in Solidworks to bring my sketches to life. Below is the exploded view of the product.

    Laser Cutting & Assembly

After modeling, I laser cut the parts in cardboard and assembled the product.

    User testing & Evaluation Notes

I did some quick user testing and got feedback on the design.

    What worked

    • The main thing was that the player incited user interaction without even prompting users. (Noticed a couple of users interacting with the player while I was testing out other models)
    • The cassette control buttons and and cassette slot interaction was understood by all the users.
    • Got feedback that the player does look to scale and has good finishing.

    What didn’t work

    • Volume knob did not have any label hence it was a bit confusing. Users figured that it is the volume knob but would have like to see a label.
    • The notch for pulling out the cassette player slider was a bit smaller for some users.
    • The sliding movement was not very smooth.
    • Assumed users will interact with screen first, but most of them inserted the cassette first and then interacted with touch screen. Some screens I had created for cassette instructions were not of use.
    • Some used the cassette insertion as the normal pull out at an angle and slide the cassette in; instead of sliding out the entire cassette tray.

    What would I change

    • Support multiple entry points to the task, screen as well as cassette. Will add screens accordingly.
    • I would change the connect device button on home-screen to play via bluetooth. To have uniform level (play something) at home-screen.
    • I would make the sliding interaction smoother that what it is.
